The opening of high-value datasets of public interest has gained momentum

The State Data Agency is opening up high-value data (HDD) sets, with the aim of making as much public sector data with high social and economic potential as possible open for reuse and creating added value for the state.

European Commission (EC) legislation stipulates that by June of this year, all European Union (EU) countries must open and publish DVD collections of the specified categories. Lithuanian Open Data Portal More than 1.4 thousand different public sector open data sets are already published and can be downloaded in electronic format.

"High-value datasets are data that are useful to a large number of users. They can be used by businesses to develop innovative products, the scientific community to advance their field of interest, and the public to find interesting and useful information. This type of data is opened across the EU according to an international standard," said Dr. Jūratė Petrauskienė, Director General of the State Data Agency.

The EC Regulation specifies specific data categories: geospatial data (postal codes, national and local maps such as topographic, marine or other), satellite-derived earth observation and environmental data, meteorological data (observations, weather forecasts), statistical data (national, regional and local statistics, including key demographic and economic indicators), company and corporate ownership data (company and business registers) and mobility data (transport timetables, road works, etc.).

Currently, the data in the statistical data category are being opened, and the full publication is planned for January. The State Data Agency, as one of the largest producers of information production, has already transferred about 70 official statistical data sets to the common data space. The available data include gross domestic product at current prices, general fertility and mortality rates, energy consumption, corporate investments in environmental protection, etc.

The DVD sets will also be opened by various institutions in the country, such as the National Land Service, the Geological Survey of Lithuania, the Lithuanian Hydrometeorological Service, the State Service for Protected Areas, the Environmental Protection Agency, and the Inland Waterways Directorate.

The opening of DVD collections at the State Data Agency is carried out in accordance with the "New Generation Lithuania" plan project "Integration of State Information Resources into the State Data Lake", which provides not only for the integration of other state information systems, registers, and databases into a common data ecosystem and the opening of their data, but also for the inventory of data from these resources.

The State Data Agency is implementing the project "Integration of State Information Resources into a Data Lake", which is financed by the Economic Recovery and Resilience Plan "New Generation Lithuania" and the Lithuanian state budget.
